Add luxury accommodation, a spirit-lifting spa open to hotel and day spa guests and 500 pieces of art throughout the hotel guests are guaranteed a memorable break.

The Judgement of Paris (pictured above) is where it all started. On 24th May 1976 an Englishman, Steven Spurrier, staged a competitive blind tasting of French and Californian wines in a small room in a Paris hotel. It was here that a strange thing happened, rocking the so called ‘civilised’ world to its roots. In a blind tasting with some of the leading French wine aficionados of the day, unknown Californian wines were chosen over France’s best. From this moment on Sir Peter Michael (owner of The Vineyard) was inspired. Today at The Vineyard you will find over 800 Californian wines on the list, including the critically acclaimed Peter Michael wines from his winery in Knights Valley, Sonoma.

Dining at The Vineyard Hotel is an experience not to be missed. Award-winning head chef Daniel Galmiche has created several menus working with Restaurant & Wine Director Alan Holmes, to showcase flavours in food and wine at their best. The Judgement Tasting Menu brings together 12 wines; 6 Californian and 6 French. Who will get your vote? This is the question diners are asked as they enjoy two wines paired with each dish. A vegetarian pairing menu is also available. Lesser known wines from other parts of the world are also offered, according to the diner’s interests and palate. Several other menus are also offered and guests are generally encouraged to sample 4 to 5 dishes each paired with a different wine. At The Vineyard, 100 wines from around the world can be enjoyed by the glass.

Sir Peter Michael first went to California in 1972 when he was 34 and discovered the high quality of Californian wine for himself. The Paris tasting was an inspiration for him to search for a suitable vineyard location, which he finally found in 1982 and started the Peter Michael Winery.

The Vineyard is a member of Relais & Châteaux and home to 49 individually designed bedrooms and suites.
