Set high on a cliff above Fistral Beach in Newquay, the four-star Headland Hotel is an imposing Grade II-listed family-run Victorian spa hotel with adjacent five-star self-catering cottages in The Headland Village. The Headland’s prime location makes it the perfect base for an active break with the surrounding north Cornish countryside adding inspiration.

Last Spring saw the arrival of The Headland’s Surf Sanctuary offering lessons in a variety of ocean sports for beginners and more experienced guests. The coaches are all highly accomplished local surfers with RLSS National Beach Lifeguard and ISA Surf Coach qualifications. And all equipment is provided. Surf Sanctuary offer the following ocean sports:

One of the latest trends in ocean sports, SUP – Stand Up Paddle boarding originated in Hawaii, and is big in the USA. It is easy to master once you get the balance and is a really enjoyable way to get – or keep – fit. Suitable for ages 8 upward, duration two hours.

Cornwall, and in particular Newquay, is at the very heart of the British surf scene. Fistral Beach is one of the world’s top surfing beaches and is the perfect place to dip your toe in the waters of surfing – with the fresh Atlantic waters surrounding you.

This is a thrilling sport ideal for the Atlantic waves. Learn to handle the kite, about safety, weather systems and board starts. Experience the combined power of the wind and sea. Ages 15 and up. Duration three hours.

Coasteering is a new way to explore the cliffs and rocks of Cornwall. Combining rock climbing, cliff jumping and cannoning all rolled into one action-packed exploration off the Cornish cliff headlands. No experience is necessary and guests will be kitted out with full safety gear and be able to go at their own pace. Ages 12 and up. Duration two and a half hours.

One to One: £80, Two to One: £120, Three +: £50 per person, Surf group lesson: £35 per person, SUP group lesson: £40 per person, Coasteer group session: £45 per person. Rental and suits from £20.

For guests who prefer to stay on dry land for less adrenaline-based activities, then the neighbouring nine-hole approach golf course has stunning views and provides clubs, irons and balls for guest use free of charge. More serious golfers an 18-hole Newquay Links course is also available opposite The Headland. In addition, there are three tennis courses, crocket and putting with all equipment supplied free of charge.

The Headland unveiled Cornwall’s largest spa at the beginning of last year. The Leisure Area includes a heated indoor swimming pool with a jet stream and bubble seats, Swedish sauna, Cornish salt steam room, aromatherapy showers and hot tub and state-of-the-art Life Fitness gym with personal training packages. The spa soon became Cornwall’s only five bubble rated spa by The Good Spa Guide. The Headland also features an outdoor swimming pool overlooking Fistral Beach.

Six luxuriously spacious treatment rooms include a couple’s treatment room with its own hydrotherapy bath and rhassoul mudroom. As a hotel that is proud to promote all things local, The Headland introduced AFYNA Cornish, organic skincare brand this winter. Hand blended in Cornwall by spa therapist Sara Young, signature treatments include the ‘Spa Gerys-Da (Cornish for Renowned Spa), a luxuriously relaxing treatment that begins with a foot cleans and reflexology massage, which will relax backs, then a skin polish using Bespoke Cornish Sea Salt Scrub followed by a full body massage. The finale is a facial with seaweed mask and head massage. Bliss.
