Ely, located in Cambridgeshire is home to one of the UK’s most famous Cathedrals. Ely Cathedral dominates the skyline and sits just opposite Ely’s leading independent hotel, Poets House. The Cathedral has been the set for many major productions and most recently appeared in the Netflix drama The Crown, which is currently available to stream. Ely Cathedral was transformed to look like Westminster Abbey. Ely is no stranger to film stars and over the years these have included Cate Blanchette, Natalie Portman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Eddie Redmayne and many others.
Poets House hotel is home to just 21 bedrooms including eight master suites, many have views of the Cathedral. The hotel’s design is contemporary and the hotel is home to a street facing restaurant ‘The Dining Room’, serving both traditional and modern British dishes. A modern cocktail bar ‘The Study’ faces the hotel’s courtyard. Originally consisting of three Grade-II-listed properties of the early 1900s and the home of a renowned local author, today, Poets House is a stylish luxury hotel ideal for short breaks.
Daniel Perjesi is Head Chef at Poets House Hotel. Daniel oversees both ‘The Dining Room’ with 40 covers which is open daily for lunch and dinner and he also oversees the ‘The Study’ bar which offers lunch and afternoon tea daily. The menu’s mains include Seared Venison (Juniper crust, celeriac gratin, black cabbage), Salt Baked Celeriac (Steamed millet, crispy kale, beetroot) and Cod Supreme (crushed cauliflower, picked cockles) amongst others.
Ely has plenty to keep visitors busy outdoors. Wicken Fen Nature Reserve was the first reserve owned by the National Trust. Today, it is one of Europe’s most important wetlands home to over 9000 of the rarest and most endangered species. Throughout the year there is a wonderful array of wildlife to see. Guests can enjoy shorter strolls or longer rambles and several walks are available to download via the National Trust’s website.
Back in Ely, guests can also discover more about Ely’s most famous resident, Oliver Cromwell. Visitors can visit the former Cromwell house which has been redesigned to showcase what 17th Century domestic life would have been like. The house is also opposite Poets House Hotel.
Poets House is located just 17 miles from Cambridge and 5 minutes by taxi or a pleasant 15 minute walk from Ely train station with direct, regular train services, to London Kings Cross. Poets House is ideal for pleasure and business and is also home to a dedicated events space which can host up to 70 people.
