Machynlleth is known as the ancient capital of Wales which might explain why today this pretty market town is home to many antique shops. The area has recently become a destination for visitors seeking well priced antiques including furniture, jewellery, porcelain, memorabilia, textiles & more.

Walking around the old streets of Machynlleth guests soon notice new permanent and also pop-up antique shops which sit side-by-side the regular Welsh markets. For a short break this town offers inspiring great shopping which will often be unique.

The leading hotel in the Dyfi Estuary is Ynyshir Hall. The hotel is home to 10 bedrooms each with its own distinct character and design all created by owners Joan & Rob Reen. Many are filled with antiques and art by artist co-owner Rob Reen. Rob’s inspiration for his paintings is the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape and how it reacts with the pure, unpolluted light. For design inspiration a stay at Ynyshir Hall will add many ideas to shopping lists. Bedrooms and suites feature wood burning-style stoves, four-poster beds, antique mahogany furniture and design led silk curtains and cushions. The Renoir Room for example features a six-foot 19th century bed in the style of Louis VIII which is beautifully carved.

The High Street in Machynlleth close to Ynyshir Hall offers rich pickings in the many antique stores. The Rag & Bone shop is well worth a visit with an eclectic collection of antiques and treasure! The other must visit for vintage finds is in the seaside village of Borth – just a ten minute drive from Ynyshir Hall. Downstairs, the Friendship Inn is a traditional pub, but upstairs is a magical emporium filled with vintage clothes, shoes and curios for a fraction of the price charged in the cities. It truly makes the perfect day out – beach, beer and vintage bargains!

Guests can view Rob Reen’s most recent work; ‘Studies of Sheep’ throughout the hotel. Rob undertakes commissions and welcomes visitors to his studio in Aberdovey (by appointment). This year Rob Reen collaborated with Villeroy & Boch to create a beautiful plate to celebrate art at Ynyshir Hall. One of Rob’s unique paintings has been transferred onto dinner plates which can be found in the restaurant in both blue & red. These plates are also available to purchase and retail at £85.00. The plates are 32cm in diameter and are porcelain and available in a Limited Edition collection.

Ynyshir Hall is also a foodie destination and head chef Gareth Ward has created a choice of a 7 course or a 10 course tasting dinner paired with different wines. Breakfast, Lunch and Afternoon Tea are also served at the hotel. Gareth uses local produce which comes from areas including Cardigan Bay, Aberystwyth and Borth. Gareth also collects wild foods such as mushrooms, samphire, wood sorrel and wild garlic — all absolutely delicious thanks to the purity of the local soil, water and air.

Shop for inspiration this winter at Ynyshir Hall and discover the ancient capital of Wales.
