The laid-back vibe of Essaouira with year-round sunshine, means a holiday here will tick all the boxes particularly for independent travellers who want to discover the real Morocco. With many new restaurants, shops and galleries rubbing shoulders with traditional traders in the medina, visitors are spoilt for choice on a journey of discovery. The medina is located by the port and a short walk to the beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean.
An independent hotel set in botanical gardens, Le Jardin des Douars is the perfect base to experience Moroccan hospitality, offering privacy and easy access to the beach and medina. Here are some suggestions for 2017 on why Essaouira is a great destination:
Art: As visitors walk around the easy to navigate medina, they encounter many studios run by live in artists who produce distinctive paintings and sculptures. For a town of this size, visitors instantly notice the number of galleries.
Beach: Essaouira’s sunshine and windy climate in the winter make it an ideal destination to enjoy surfing, wind surfing and kite surfing. Expect waves of between one and three metres.
Ecotourism: Essaouira is home to the famous Argan trees found across forests just inland from the Atlantic coast. The Argan is a true symbol of the region surrounding Essaouira. Southwest Morocco produces this highly prized oil which is extracted from nuts and these have been used across the world in beauty products and spa treatments.
Food: Essaouira’s outdoor fish grill stands are a lively option for lunch. Located at the port, the laid-back stands sit side-by-side and offer a truly unique dining experience. Visitors simply select from a selection of freshly caught fish, this is then cooked on the grill and served with salad and bread.
Medina: The UNESCO Medina is a creative laid-back area where craftsmen and women create authentic Moroccan pieces. Essaouira’s medina is smaller than those in other Moroccan cities meaning guests can explore and shop without getting lost.
Music: The Gnaoua Festival takes place between 29th June and 2nd July 2017. This annual contemporary world music festival welcomes a diverse selection of artists for four days. The vibrant festival spills out across the town with street performances.
