All visitors head to Ely Cathedral located in the heart of the city and opposite Poets House Hotel. This imposing structure towers across the fens for miles around. Fans of the Netflix drama The Crown will recognise the building instantly. Dominating the skyline, it is one of England’s most beautiful and largest Cathedrals. It is famous for its unique Octagon tower, which when lit can be seen for tens of miles. The Cathedral is also home to the Stained Glass Museum, the only national museum dedicated to stained glass.
Ely has a beautiful waterside for strolls discovering the local countryside. Visitors can enjoy a boat trip along the River Great Ouse. Visitors can embark on Ely’s Eel Trail! This walk invites walkers to discover the architecture and history of this small city. Ely’s marshland and waters once contained many eels which were part of the local staple diet. Visitors can still sample smoked eel at Ely’s award-winning Farmers Market. The Eel Trail highlights around 18 local attractions starting at Oliver Cromwell’s House and Ely’s tourism information centre where the leaftlet can be picked up. Other highlights of the trail include The Bishop’s Palace, Ely Porta, Ely Museum, the antiques centre by the Waterside and of course the world famous Ely cathedral.
Fans of art will find plenty to discover in Ely. Babylon Gallery is a small arts centre home to contemporary art located in a former brewery warehouse on Ely’s waterside. Haddenham Galleries is an innovative creative art gallery with ten changing exhibitions each year.
Poets House Hotel re-launched in late 2016 and the AA recently recognised the superior levels of service and quality and high standards achieved across the hotel. The hotel has been awarded 4 AA Silver Stars further confirming the hotel as Ely’s leading hotel and restaurant. Home to just 21 bedrooms including eight master suites, the hotel’s design is contemporary and the hotel is home to a street facing restaurant ‘The Dining Room’, serving both traditional and modern British dishes with a twist and a contemporary modern cocktail bar facing the hotel’s courtyard. Originally consisting of three Grade-II-listed properties of the early 1900s and the home of a renowned local author, today Poets House is a stylish award-winning luxury hotel.
Daniel Perjesi is Head Chef at Poets House Hotel. Daniel oversees both ‘The Dining Room’ with 40 covers which is open daily for dinner (lunch at weekends) and he also oversees the lounge which offers lunch and afternoon tea daily. The dinner menu is priced £20 for one course, £25 for two courses and £30 for three courses.
Close to Ely is Wicken Fen Nature Reserve, ideal for a day trip. This was the first reserve owned by the National Trust. Today, it is one of Europe’s most important wetlands home to over 9000 of the rarest and most endangered species. Throughout the year there is a wonderful array of wildlife to see. Guests can enjoy shorter strolls or longer rambles and several walks are available to download via the National Trust’s website.
Poets House and restaurant is located just 17 miles from Cambridge and 5 minutes by taxi or a pleasant 15 minute walk from Ely train station with direct, regular train services, to London Kings Cross.
