Just three hours from London, Essaouira is fast becoming the year-round active destination, with a wonderful climate for all manner of outdoor activities. The city combines beaches and an historic medina. Located just ten minutes from the centre of Essaouira in the mountains, is the city’s finest independent hotel or ksar (palace), Le Jardin des Douars. The hotel is situated and surrounded by botanical gardens and is home to two outdoor heated pools and a hammam. Only 28 bedrooms, suites and luxury villas; all with their own outdoor space, make up Le Jardin des Douars. It is the ideal base to enjoy the many outdoor pursuits this city has to offer. The hotel’s three dining areas offer the absolute backdrop after an active day in the ocean or on land.
Sea Activities – 10 minutes from Le Jardin des Douars
Essaouira’s beaches are famous for their wonderful waves. Kite surfing, surfing and wind surfing are all on offer. Places to head to include: Essaouira Bay, Sidi Kaouki and Moulay Bouzerktoune. Follow the waves and wind on some of Morocco’s most unspoilt beautiful beaches.
Land Activities – 10 minutes from Le Jardin des Douars
Extensive beaches and dunes and further inland, valleys ensure land activities available are aplenty. Quad biking away from busy roads is on offer throughout the year. Horse and camel riding along the beach is the ultimate way to view both sea and land.
Golf – 5 minutes from Le Jardin des Douars
Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Essaouira’s beach is Golf de Mogador. Designed by Gary Player, the newly launched 18 and 13 hole courses are wonderfully integrated into the natural environment. Open daily, the two courses are ideal for professionals and beginners.
The Medina – 10 minutes from Le Jardin des Douars
The UNESCO Medina is a creative laid-back art-filled area where local artists and craftsmen and women create authentic Moroccan pieces. Essaouira’s medina is smaller than those in other Moroccan cities meaning guests can explore and shop without getting lost. Fans of both ‘Game of Thrones’ and 1950’s film ‘Othello’ may recognise the military fortifications area at the seafront where these were filmed. Visitors won’t go hungry, seafood is excellent here and available at every turn. By the harbour at the gates of the medina, a strip of fish restaurants offers all manner of fresh fish. Guests can visit the shipyard and wooden boats.
Back at Le Jardin des Douars, the hammam and spa which is open until 8pm daily is the place to enjoy the traditional hammam ritual, with products containing Argan oil. A selection of massages are also available. Throughout their stay at Le Jardin des Douars, guests can dip and swim in the outdoor heated swimming pools; one designated for adults only and the other for families only.
Breakfast is served daily until 10.30am. Lunch is an outdoor affair on the terrace with the backdrop of Moroccan sounds and daily changing specials. Guests are encouraged to meet at the bar at 19.00 to share a cocktail before dinner. Dinner is then served in either Le Ksar or in the more intimate adults only La Table des Douars. The menu is a real fusion of Moroccan, North African and French flavours. A daily seasonal menu is also offered using local, organic produce.
