Harpers Media

Jardin des Douars - Harper's Bazaar

Hotels are often described as hidden gems, but Le Jardin des Douars, nestled away in the hills of Essaouria, Morocco, must truly be the most special and secluded of them all. In fact, so prized is it as a secret oasis, that one Harper's Bazaar member actually pleaded with us not to write about it. But, here we go...

Tatler Media

Llangoed Hall - Tatler

First thing to learn: two 'll's together in Welsh means you make a 'cl' sound. So it's actually 'Clangoed' Hall. Got that? Marvellous. This place used to belong to Laura Ashley's husband, Bernard, who bought it two years after the designer died and decorated it in her trademark style before it opened as a hotel in 1990. Very much a country-house hotel, it's perfect for a spoiling weekend on the edge of the Brecon Beacons and magnificently comfortable, with Laura Ashley traces still in evidence - pretty floral bedspreads in enormous, thick-carpeted bedrooms and Whistler sketches on the walls.

The i Newspaper Media

Middlethorpe Hall - The i Newspaper

I arise from the four-poster bed slip into my rich, cotton dressing gown and while I wait for my dresser, take in the rolling turf, stately trees and luxuriant richness of the view from one of the bedroom’s tall sash windows. Actually, it turns out to be a rather long wait as I’m not, sadly, living in the 18th century or appearing in an episode of Downton Abbey. I am however staying in the stately surroundings of Middlethorpe Hall a William and Mary house owned by the National Trust but run as country house hotel. Our room on the first floor up a magnificent wooden staircase features all the adornments of a classy pad in the 18th century with the added of bonus of a en-suite bathroom, and flat-screen television.

Ultratravel Media

Jardin des Douars - Ultratravel: Daily Telegraph

Villa Basmah, Le Jardin des Douars; Morocco In Essaouira, Villa Basmah is a capacious terracotta-coloured retreat with a vast living area and numerous inviting alcoves. It comfortably accommodates the needs of multigenerational groups but in warm weathers guests inevitably gather on the terrace for refreshing dips in the pool and traditional snacks made by the villa's chef.

National Geographic Traveller Media

Middlethorpe Hall - National Geographic Traveller

Tucked away in a green-soaked lane, close to the racecourse, the redbrick building has National Trust written all over it. The 18th century country house, situated one-and-a-half miles from York, is crammed with charming quirks. The stone-clad entrance hallway mixes lavish manor house with a touch of grandma’s living room, and the stairway leading to the bedrooms is grand without being pretentious. As I arrive, I’m escorted to my room, ready for a weekend away from the bustle and razzmatazz of London.

Telegraph Vineyard Media

The Vineyard Hotel - Daily Telegraph

The Vineyard, which Sir Peter first opened in the late 1990s, puts its wine offering centre stage. The entrance hall packs a punch, with glass fronted wine vaults, bathed in lighting that can change from blue to purple to green, flanking the entrance to the California Bar, which is dominated by a 2012 specially commissioned painting by Gary Myatt which covers the whole wall. The painting, After the Fall, depicts a real life event that took place in Paris in 1976 when Stephen Spurrier organized a blind wine tasting for a group of experts, in which Californian wines were deemed, for the first time, better than French. The shock that followed rocked the wine world and the event is known as The Judgement of Paris.

The Lux Pad by Amara Media

Hampton Manor - The Lux Pad by AMARA

Originally built by Sir Frederick Peel, son of the 19th century Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, Hampton Manor was modelled on Drayton Manor where his father resided nearby. A staunch industrialist, the home reflected these beliefs with ‘industria’ engraved across the staircase and a lion crest in numerous spots around the property. The hotel’s decorative details create a stark juxtaposition between the celebration of industry and a focus on local craftsmanship advocated by William Morris and the Arts & Crafts movement. The new interior continues the trend for the modern age with Fjona acting as the interior designer and drawing on her photographic background and sharp visual eye to carve out an interior scheme which draws on current trends but also celebrates local industrial and artisanal heritage.

The Arb Media

Jardin des Douars - The Arbuturian

On paper Le Jardin sounds huge, dwarfing your average guesthouse in the area – choose between the family-friendly pool and the adults-only infinity pool, between two dining rooms and dinner served on the terrace, between hammam and spa. Throw in the golf course – Golf de Mogador, five minutes’ drive away, with two 18-hole courses – and the location, set apart a bit from the city itself, and you’re ticking a lot of the boxes of a big resort franchise.

Stylenest Media

Hampton Manor - STYLENEST

A little way outside of Solihull In the prosperous village of Hampton-in-Arden sits boutique hotel Hampton Manor. With a remarkably good Michelin starred restaurant, and a team of tweed-clad staff who run the operation with enormous enthusiasm, Hampton Manor could well be the best place to stay in the West Midlands.

Palais Amani Fez - Zoomer

The secret to a seamless stay in Fez, Morocco, according to Joanne Shurvell, is to stay at a luxury riad. Scroll through below as she gives a glimpse of the hotel and the city. From the rooftop terrace of Palais Amani, we were mesmerized by the panoramic views of the Middle Atlas mountains that dramatically frame the ancient city of Fez, with its verdant hills and valleys nearby supplying olives, almonds, beans and peas to the medina.

The Cheshire Magazine Media

Middlethorpe Hall - The Cheshire Magazine

Owned by the National Trust, Middlethorpe Hall is a William and Mary country house straight from the pages of 19th century romance novel. It occupies 20-acres of landscaped gardens on the outskirts of historic York and was our weekend getaway destination. Just over an hour and a half away (with easy motorway access) from Cheshire there's lots to do nearby but there's plenty to attract you simply to escape here. Sympathetically restored the hotel offers suites in the main house and courtyard. Our home for the next two nights was in the Sir Henry Thompson Suite in the courtyard, a light ground floor apartment almost with living room, kitchenette, large bedroom and bathroom.

Culinary heavyweight Nick Brodie has built his name with a career that has spanned Hong Kong to London before making the UK his home and working his way up the kitchen system in many of the world’s best restaurants and alongside many award winning chefs. Nick now heads up the kitchen at the 3 AA Rosette Llangoed Hall in Wales where he has built up a growing reputation for his innovative style of cooking and for using the best seasonal ingredients. This year for the second year in a row, Llangoed Hall appears in The Good Food Guide and more notably in the guide’s Top 50 Restaurants in the UK.

Jardin des Douars - SPA.KITCHEN

Upon entering into Jardin des Douars, one suddenly bids farewell to the arid dust and dirt of the Essaouira highway and discovers a secret place where pink, white and orange bougainvillea petals float gently on the breeze, large desert succulents populate giant earthen pots, and gentle terracotta domes perch regally above the wind swept trees.

Homes Gardens Media

Hampton Manor - Homes & Gardens

Original features and contemporary classics are a happy match at this restored Neo-Gothic mansion. Once in the estate of Sir Robert Peel, this West Midlands country house was close to dereliction when James and Fjona Hill came to its rescue. The pair have brought Hampton Manor into the 21st century with a hefty dose of contemporary chic, while gently restoring many of the period details, such as the oak panelling and stained-glass windows.

Vineyard Standard Media

The spa offers grape-themed treatments, rooms are named after wines and guests can arrange their own blind tasting, mirroring the Judgement of Paris, whose 40th anniversary is next May. Sir Peter has added himself into history in a vast mural commissioned to mark the event.

The Stafford London - Country & Townhouse

Tucked away in the heart of St James’s, The Stafford has history, hidden delights and bags of personality, not least thanks to Master Sommelier Gino Nardella, head barman Ben Provost and head concierge Frank Laino – all characters, all long serving.

The Times Hartwell Media

Hartwell House - The Times

Imagine one of the most stunning stately homes in England, a glorious hotchpotch of Jacobean and Georgian set in Capability Brown-inspired grounds. That’s the surprisingly little-known Hartwell House, a National Trust property that is one of a trio of establishments run for paying guests by Historic House Hotels. That you can actually stay here at all is enough to make you pinch yourself.

Eventus Palais Amani Media

Palais Amani Fez - Eventus Magazine

Akin to an ancient playground, the old Medina of Fez – or Fes – unravels like a rabbit warren that hides just over a million people. Sometimes dubbed the “Athens of Africa”, this ancient city is listed as a World Heritage Site and houses the first ever university - still operating today since 859, founded by Fatima al-Fihri. Along with Alex Dellow from HADENOUGH Media, we had the pleasure of being guests of Palais Amani who introduced us to a world far removed from what we’ve ever known.

Almaha Marrakech - Get Surrey

Located less than a 10 minute taxi ride from Marrakech Menara Airport, Almaha Marrakech in Kasbah was our home for the next three nights. When we alighted from our transfer in the city’s oldest neighbourhood, we followed our host down a dusty cobbled side street to a large disconcerting wooden door. Us holidaymakers always bring a mixed bag of feelings when we first approach our booked hotel; excitement, nervousness, anticipation, and above all hope that the website photos lived up to reality. Thankfully when the hinges opened, our welcome exceeded our expectations.

Olive Llangoed Media

Llangoed Hall - Olive Magazine

A ‘white palace’ allegedly home to the first Welsh parliament. A Jacobean mansion won in a card game. A family home restored to its former glory by designer Laura Ashley’s family. The site that Llangoed Hall sits on certainly vaunts a colourful history. Now it’s home to a country house hotel with acclaimed restaurant, extensive gardens (walled, rose and fruit among them) and stunning bedrooms.

Ladies What Stafford Media

The Stafford London - Ladies What Travel Blog

Our balcony looked out over the superbly kept and wonderfully secluded courtyard, including a spiral staircase to the wine cellar, which was beautifully lit up at night by hundreds of fairy lights. The generously sized bedroom and ensuite were also very impressive. The bathroom was big enough for two sinks, a large bath, and a shower room and offered an array of Floris toiletries that smelled fabulous. The attention to detail in our suite was wonderful, the bed sheets, pillows and bath robes all had the Stafford London logo beautifully stitched onto them, which gave the room a luxurious feel, and not a thing was out of place or anything less than spotless.
