Palace Life & Medina Breaks in Morocco’s City of Senses – Fez
13 Feb 2014
Fez’s medina, Africa’s largest, is full of ancient alleys bedecked with hand-made crafts all produced within this magical environment of some 10,000 streets and walkways. Senses will be outshone with sights of rich fabrics, distinctive ceramics and the unique tanneries where leather is cured. The sense of smell will also be heightened with the many restaurants, kiosks and spice markets serving distinct Moroccan dishes washed down with the famous sweet green mint tea. If it is sounds that excite, then the calls to prayer will alert visitors to the spiritual magic that forms Morocco’s third largest city.
Palais Amani is the ideal base to recharge those senses and is located in the walled medieval city at the start of the medina in Fez. Totally refurbished, Palais Amani is the biggest authentic Riad in Fez offering 14 luxury suites and bedrooms. The relaxing 600m2 garden opens onto a Hammam where guests travel to a world of sensations and relaxation enjoying a selection of traditional Moroccan rituals. The Hammam is designed in true Moroccan style complete with a hot room, an exfoliation room, separate showers and a luxury relaxation chamber. Palais Amani’s restaurant serves meals throughout the day showcasing a Moroccan European fusion menu. A library with a selection of games is also available and open 24 hours. For a truly impressive view of Fez guests can enjoy the private roof terrace with spectacular 360⁰ views of the unique ancient city and surrounding mountains beyond, a bar is also located on the terrace and is the ideal spot to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail served with homemade Moroccan snacks.

A hand and foot bath with sea salt crystals starts the journey and this is followed by a pumice stone foot scrub using a natural rose water and bran scrub. A clear water rinse is then applied. The head is also treated and a Natural Henna or White clay ‘Ghasoul’ hair mask is applied, this is followed by a gentle shampoo and clear water rinse. Guests are then offered a body clay mask and wrap followed by a body steam bath by a personal therapist. Black soap with argan oil and wild mint is used. The therapist then offers a full body scrub using a traditional exfoliation glove, a great treatment to help with circulation. The ‘Royal Hammam’ is accompanied by a homemade refreshment.
