Hartwell House in the Buckinghamshire countryside stands in over 90 acres of gardens and parkland, landscaped by a contemporary of Capability Brown. This National Trust hotel, one of three Historic House Hotels, includes a lake spanned by a stone bridge, a ruined church and many 18th century statues and garden buildings. This is also the hotel with Royal history, in 1809, Hartwell House was leased to the exiled King Louis XVIII of France and his court. It is one of England’s finest stately homes to stay at and recharge.
Guests can enjoy special walks around the grounds with a copy of their Tree Map, to identify 10 prize specimens, from a Horse Chestnut and a London Plane tree to a Giant Sequoia (an 87- ft conifer which bears cones all year round). The warmer months also offer the opportunity to play croquet in this tranquil setting with a Grade I listed property as a backdrop.
With tennis in the spotlight throughout the summer months, Hartwell House offers guests use of two outdoor all weather tennis courts, available to use throughout the year. Hartwell House also provides tennis equipment.
Hartwell Spa resides in the grounds with a mosaic-lined indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam rooms, gym and Spa Café overlooking the pool and opening out on to a terrace in summertime. Hartwell House are the only hotel offering treatments by BIOEFFECT. Aside from BIOEFFECT, guests can also enjoy treatments by leading brands Aromatherapy Associates and Jessica.
The house has 32 bedrooms and suites, some named after the members of the Court of Louis XVIII. Hartwell Court, originally the 18th century coach house and situated approximately 100 yards from the house, has been restored to provide 16 bedrooms and suites. All feature antique furniture and paintings and all have delightful views of the gardens. The restaurant has been awarded two AA Rosettes and is open daily. Head Chef Daniel Richardson uses herbs and produce from the extensive kitchen gardens across all menus at the hotel. Afternoon tea is served daily in the public rooms where evening cocktails and pre-dinner drinks are also served.
In 2008, Historic House Hotels Ltd and its interest in all three properties (Hartwell House, Middlethorpe Hall and Bodysgallen Hall), were given to the National Trust to ensure their long-term protection.
