Historic House Hotels are a collection of three very special places – Hartwell House, Bodysgallen Hall and Middlethorpe Hall. Staying in these beautifully restored stately homes, now owned by the National Trust; guests can feel they are in a private house rather than a hotel. Hartwell House is an impressive stately home in the Vale of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire once graced by Louis XVIII, exiled King of France. The grade I listed house has both Jacobean and Georgian facades and ornate interiors rich with rococo ceilings, antiques and paintings. The hotel is also home to a spa where Aromatherapy Associate treatments are offered. An indoor swimming pool is also available for guest use.

Hartwell’s heady programme of events gets off to a good start with the 8th Wine Dinner and Vinosity Challenge! Tony Critchley, who buys all of Hartwell’s wines, will conduct tours of the cellars, along with the resident wine waiters. Wine tasting in the drawing rooms will precede the special three-course dinner with mystery wines served and a light hearted ‘Vinosity quiz to test guests knowledge of the tipple. Tour and tastings at 7.30pm then dinner at 8.15pm, £75 per person including dinner with wines. Special accommodation rate of £180 with breakfast.

Hartwell is the perfect romantic setting with its acres of serene parkland, rich history and sense of occasion. Add in a sumptuous five-course Valentine’s menu featuring lobster and crab cocktail with lemon mayonnaise, terrine of Aylesbury duckling with caramelised orange, fillet of beef and strawberry soufflé with coffee and chocolates. Included is a glass of rose Champagne and a rose on the table. £85 per person.

Set on a hill above the seaside town of Llandudno, Bodysgallen Hall is a restored 17th house with spectacular views across Snowdonia and Conwy Castle from the Main Hall, which dates back to the 13th century. The 200 acres of parkland include follies, a walled garden and a rare 17th century parterre of box hedges filled with sweet herbs. Imaginative menus feature largely local and seasonal fare. Middlethorpe Hall is a 17th century William and Mary country house standing in 20 acres of manicured gardens and parkland just outside of the historic city of York. Once the home of the famous diarist Lady Mary Wortley-Montagu, Middlethorpe has been restored with carefully chosen antiques and art work.

Inject some sparkle into February with a gourmet four-course dinner accompanied by Louis Roederer Champagnes with a different glass for each dish. Among the impressive array is the now famous Cristal, designed exclusively for Tsar Alexander II of Russia which guests will also sample. Dinner includes truffled duck egg, roast diver-caught scallop with Jerusalem artichoke, poached and roasted spring chicken and rhubarb panna cotta.

Masons Yorkshire Gin is made with Harrogate spring water and a blend of juniper, citrus elements and secret botanicals. Join Middlethorpe for a gin cocktail tasting including Masons Smash, Masons Moors Martini and Bloody Masons followed by a three-course lunch to compliment (smoked salmon cannelloni, venison and juniper pie and warm lemon cake). £59.50pp with gin tasting and lunch or £134.50pp with overnight accommodation with Yorkshire breakfast.
