Introducing SUP (Stand Up Paddle Boarding), Surfing & Kitesurfing on Fistral Beach
The Headland’s unique location on the ocean’s edge overlooking Fistral Beach makes it the UK’s leading hotel for all things surf. Spring 2014 saw the arrival of Surf Sanctuary at The Headland offering a selection of lessons in a variety of ocean sports to beginners and more experienced surfers and ocean sports fans.
Surf Sanctuary’s coaches are all highly accomplished local surfers with RLSS National Beach Lifeguard and ISA Surf Coach qualifications. Founder Dom Moore has spent the past couple of decades exploring and refining his passion for ocean sports and offers unique experiences in surfing, SUPing, kitesurfing, swimming and free diving.
The Headland already offers a selection of leisure facilities to enhance any stay including an outdoor swimming pool, tennis court and gym. In January The Headland unveiled Cornwall’s largest and only 5 bubble rated spa. Surf Sanctuary offer a choice of four activities to introduce the sea to the guest and these include:
One of the latest trends in ocean sports is SUP – Stand Up Paddle boarding. SUP originated in Hawaii hundreds of years ago, so Surf Sanctuary guests will be tapping right into the source of surf culture in the Atlantic ocean which surrounds The Headland on three sides. The boards are very stable, and Surf Sanctuary keeps to the calmer seas so everyone can enjoy paddling at their own pace. SUP is an incredibly healthy sport and once the basics are mastered, can be practised safely in many locations.
Suitable for ages 8 and up. All equipment provided. Duration of 2 hours.
Surfing is the quintessential Cornish ocean sport. Fistral Beach is widely regarded as one of Europe’s finest surfing beaches, and it’s the perfect place to start a surfing adventure. No one ever forgets their first surf session; fresh salty air, sand between the toes, rushing Atlantic surf, and that post-surf afterglow. Surf Sanctuary’s surfing coaches will tailor the lesson to the guest’s needs; surfing is among the most accessible sports going, and it has been known to change lives forever.
Suitable for ages 8 and up. All equipment provided. Duration of 2 ½ hours.
Few things in life can rival the immersive rush of learning to kitesurf. With its wide open beaches and maritime weather, Cornwall is one of the best places to learn this thrilling sport. The Surf Sanctuary coach will supply all the equipment needed and help guests progress step-by-step as they learn about kite handling, safety, weather systems and ultimately, board starts. With the kite as the silent engine, guests will experience the wind and sea in a way that will stay with them always.
Suitable for ages 15 and up. All equipment provided. Duration of 3 hours per session.
Jump, climb, swim, just some of the experiences guests will feel on this unique ride! Coasteering is an instant rush and guests don’t need any experience, just a thirst for adventure. Guests will be kitted out with full safety gear and Surf Sanctuary guides will help choose a route and tempo to traverse the stunning coastline around The Headland. This ocean sport is ideal to get the adrenaline pumping whilst exploring the coastline from a totally different perspective.
Suitable for ages 12 and up. All equipment provided. Duration of 2 ½ hours.
After a day on the waves, guests can withdraw to The Headland and enjoy the Wellness & Leisure Area which includes a pool with jet stream, Cornish salt steam room, Swedish sauna and aromatherapy showers or guests can book in for a spa treatment from a selection of leading spa brands including VOYA.
Whatever the level of skill, Surf Sanctuary packages have been designed to make the most of the west-facing Atlantic swell with consistent waves making the guest experience both memorable and enjoyable.
