Hartwell House is a Grade I listed property standing in over 90 acres of gardens and parkland in Buckinghamshire and is one of three Historic House Hotels part of the National Trust. Hartwell House’s gardens were landscaped by a contemporary of Capability Brown and designed at the start of the 18th century. Summer is the ideal time to enjoy the great outdoors at this unique historic house.

Here are some moments to enjoy outside at Hartwell House:

1. Walk the Tree Guide Tour
Guests can enjoy special walks around the grounds with a copy of their Tree Map, to identify many prize specimens from a Cedar of Lebanon and a London Plane tree to a Giant Sequoia (an 87 foot conifer which bears cones all year round).

2. Book a Garden Tour
Throughout the year, Hartwell House hosts garden tours with head gardener Richard Jones. The ‘Summer Luncheon & Garden Tour’ takes place on Wednesday 4th July and includes morning coffee, a two-course luncheon with wine and coffee after the tour. The following tour takes place on Friday 17th August.

3. Walk over the Bridge
Observe the gardens and house from the stunning stone bridge which spans the beautiful lake. The bridge was previously the centre arch of Kew Bridge which was brought to Hartwell in 1901.

4. Explore Garden Buildings
Encounter unique garden buildings and statues including the Gothic tower, a statue of Hercules and a portion of the statue of Marsya. The Canal Temple includes statues of Jupiter and Juno. The Rusticated Arch was moved to the garden’s southern perimeter and the Obelisk and William III’s Column are still to be found in the garden.

5. Play Tennis
With tennis in the spotlight throughout the summer months, Hartwell House offers guests use of two outdoor, all weather tennis courts, available to use throughout the year located in the former walled garden. Hartwell House also provides tennis equipment.

6. Play the quintessential game of Croquet
East of the Morning Room, Drawing Room and Library near the main house, guests can play croquet on the lawn, with the sound of bird song as a backdrop.

7. Enjoy Lunch on the Terrace
Hartwell Café is located in the former coach house and offers brunch, lunch and coffee and cake with an all-day menu. The terrace is an ideal place to dine and to enjoy the sunshine.

8. Look up at Hartwell House
It is not just the ceilings inside Hartwell House that are magnificent, be impressed with both the Jacobean and Georgian facades as you walk around it, skilfully restored some 30 years ago and includes the renovation of 18th century stables and a coach house too.

9. Volunteer
Volunteers work alongside the permanent gardening team at the hotel following a long-term plan for the conservation of the gardens taking into account their history, influences, qualities and contents. Volunteer gardeners help with the upkeep, development and protection of these now National Trust gardens, by donation.

Hartwell House opened as a hotel in 1989 and its long leasehold from the Ernest Cook Trust was donated to the National Trust in 2008. There are 48 bedrooms and suites which have all been individually designed in a traditional country house style, each with antiques and fine paintings. The main Dining Room has been designed in the style of the eminent early 19th century architect, Sir John Soane. The restaurant has been awarded two AA Rosettes and is open daily for dinner. Guests can also enjoy afternoon tea at Hartwell House. Hartwell Spa resides in the grounds with a mosaic-lined indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam rooms, gym and Hartwell Café. Hartwell House are the only hotel offering treatments by BIOEFFECT.
