- Gold Award for Headland Cottages ‘Holiday Resort of the Year’
– Silver Award for Headland Hotel ‘Large Hotel of the Year’
-‘Outstanding Contribution to Tourism’ awarded to John & Carolyn Armstrong, owners of The Headland
The Headland were awarded three awards celebrating every element of their business. The 5* cottages received a ‘Gold’ award, the 4* hotel received a ‘Silver’ award and the family run successful business was awarded an ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award at the Cornwall Tourism Awards 2014 held in November at The Headland, making these awards even more memorable.
The newly launched ‘Holiday Resort of the Year’ award recognises a destination that offers a full resort experience and The Headland Cottages were awarded ‘ Gold’, the highest honour. It is easy to see why this was awarded to The Headland. With three ocean facing restaurants; The Restaurant, The Terrace and The Spa Lounge, all serving Cornish cuisine, there are now more dining options available for cottage residents who can also opt for self-catering.
The Headland Spa is Cornwall’s most significant spa and available for use by cottage guests. Unveiled this year, the spa covers an area of around 8880 sq ft with direct access to Fistral Beach which literally sits in front of the spa entrance facing the Atlantic Ocean. The spa includes six luxury spacious treatment rooms, a couples treatment room with its own hydrotherapy bath and a rhassoul mud room. The adjoining ‘Leisure Area’ includes a heated pool with a jet stream and bubble seats, Swedish sauna, Cornish salt steam room, aromatherapy showers and hot tub. In addition, The Headland is also home to a state-of-the-art Life Fitness gym, outdoor pool and tennis courts.
The Headland’s very own surf school; Surf Sanctuary offers coaches who are all highly accomplished local surfers with RLSS National Beach Lifeguard and ISA Surf Coach qualifications. Founder Dom Moore has spent the past couple of decades exploring and refining his passion for ocean sports and offers unique experiences in surfing, SUPing, kitesurfing, swimming and free diving on Fistral Beach.
The Headland Cottages like The Headland Hotel are all dog friendly.
Cornwall is one of the UK’s most popular holiday destinations meaning standards are high along with plenty of competition which is why the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Tourism’ award is so significant. The Armstrong family arrived at The Headland in 1979 and have maintained this iconic building’s history whist investing in its future. Much work has been undertaken to ensure structural integrity of the building. The Grade II listed building has seen The Armstrong family re-invest over £25 million to maintain and develop The Headland as one of Cornwall’s finest destinations. Throughout the years under the ownership of the family, The Headland have been awarded many industry awards celebrating the uniqueness of Cornwall’s iconic hotel and luxury cottages. The continued investment and passion demonstrated by The Armstrong family will ensure The Headland is enjoyed for many more decades.
The Armstrong family feel strongly about preserving the naturally beautiful, wild and windswept landscape that surrounds it. The family run business has for many years helped keep Cornwall a beautiful place and initiatives include; Conservation work with an optional guest contribution to the National Trust of £1 which has helped improve access between Bedruthan Steps and Holywell Bay. Earlier this year The Headland presented the National Trust with a cheque for £13,000. The Headland buy locally, celebrating local Cornish produce whilst supporting sustainable practices in farming and fishing. A business this big requires ongoing renovation and The Headland operate a Free-cycle & Re-use policy offering all furniture, beds, baths and loos to local charities. Recycling is conducted throughout the hotel and glass, plastic, cardboard, paper, tins, cans and food waste are all sorted.
The Headland monitor waste recycling to ensure they are always thinking about the environment. In the operation of the business during 2010 The Headland generated 707 cubic yards of waste for disposal; 385 cubic yards were diverted from landfill to recycling, 183 cubic yards of this was food waste which went to anaerobic digestion and helped produce electricity for 20,000 homes. The Headland is a member of the ‘Green Tourism Business Scheme’ helping to focus on how best to operate the business in a sustainable manner whilst minimising the impact on the environment.
Says Darryl Reburn, General Manager; “These wins showcase our commitment to delivering the very best for our guests, many who visit us every year. We have welcomed many new guests across the business this year in both the hotel and cottages. The Headland offers both a resort like holiday and hotel for leisure and business stays. Our newly opened spa has also proved popular and our surf school continues to attract existing and new surfing fans. The Cornwall Tourism Awards which we were fortunate enough to host highlighted Cornwall’s status as a leading year-round destination. We were all delighted that the owners, The Armstrong family, were awarded a special award for their 35 years at the heart of this iconic business.”
