Magically transformed and spectacularly redecorated, London’s oldest French restaurant has picked up her skirts and can-can’d into the 21st century. This famous old favourite dating back to 1927, beloved by generations of gourmets, has new owners, a talented young chef, a welcoming Maitre D’ and smiling and attentive staff who are at your command in the way that only the French know how.

The new menu highlights classic French bourgeois dishes and changes seasonally. It is approachably priced and snails from both France and England are on the menu. Diners can feast on ‘A classic marbled foie gras terrine’ or ‘ Spicy crab toast with Asian spices’ for starters amongst others or ‘Steak-Frites’, ‘Coq au vin’ or ‘Confit de canard’ amongst an extensive mains menu. The kitchen team is headed by Oliver Lesnik. He trained for many years with Michel Bourdin at The Connaught and has worked for Jean-Christopher Novelli and Angela Hartnett. At L’Escargot he has added his culinary skills to the new owners experience; Laurence famous for giving London “the best frites this side of Paris” having co-founded the Chez Gerard group and Brian providing the all-day dining concept at the re-launched Mayfair Arts Club. 140514 lescargot031 1024x682 There’s ooh la la Waiting at London’s Most Prestigious French Restaurant in Soho

L’Escargot also has one of the best wine lists in London, with wines starting at £18 a bottle. Every day, the enlightened Maitre D’, David Seccombe, will choose an exceptional wine which will be available by the glass and en carafe at a ridiculously low price.

Upstairs there is a kaleidoscope of rooms, many of which are for private dining and some of which will house an exclusive members-only club due late summer 2014. Here food and drink will be available at all hours in a relaxed atmosphere and with membership only defined by friendliness with the owners and a liberal attitude to the arts and sciences – and life as it should be enjoyed. Membership will be priced £365.00 per year, £1 per day!

L’Escargot is now open from 11.am until Midnight, seven days a week. Vous êtes le bienvenu!
