DSC03497 Winter Sunshine In São Vicente & Across Cape Verde

An archipelago of ten islands, situated in the Atlantic Ocean, 500km off the coast of West Africa, Cape Verde ticks all the boxes for year-round sunshine and is the ideal winter destination for Europeans seeking uninterrupted warm weather.

Visitors should base themselves on the cultural island of São Vicente which remains relatively undiscovered and has not been influenced by large build hotel resorts. It is the true heart of Cape Verde. Arriving on the island of São Vicente on the north-west of the archipelago of Cape Verde, visitors are greeted with a dramatic mountainous terrain with distant coastal views of golden sand beaches. Mindelo, the capital of the island, is a lively, beautiful, cultural town and a perfect holiday destination. Small cobbled streets lead onto wide avenues lined with palm trees and colourful buildings & architecture from the Portuguese and British colonial era. Enclosed between mountains and the ocean, the bay; Porto Grande, has been classified as one of the most beautiful in the world by UNESCO.

Sail Cape Verde & Villa St. Aubyn are both the perfect bases to combine a holiday on land and at sea.

Villa St. Aubyn is located in the heart of Mindelo’s historic centre and has a Portuguese/British colonial-style feel to it. Split across three storeys, the house includes a roof terrace which offers a sundeck, lounge, dining area and a Jacuzzi. The villa is home to a master bedroom with en-suite, 2 double bedrooms; one en-suite with direct access to the terrace and one with adjoining bathroom and 1 bedroom with bunk beds. A lounge has direct access to a balcony, satellite TV, printer & high-speed wireless internet and finally a fully equipped kitchen is also available. Meals can be prepared by a chef from just €15 per person excluding alcohol. The villa also offers a full housekeeping service.
Villa St. Aubyn provides a choice of cotton or silk bed sheets along with towels for the bath, beach & gym.

Sail Cape Verde offers unique voyages of discovery from marina Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. Aboard Perseverance, a 54ft luxury yacht, visitors experience every part of the magic of these islands including the tropical neighbouring island of Santo Antão. The Cape Verde archipelago is widely spaced. The total land area of all islands is 4,033km2 scattered over 58,000km2 of ocean, there are great distances between islands so Sail Cape Verde recommend If you have a week to sail between 2-3 islands from Mindelo. With more time other islands should be explored.

On overnight trips, Perseverance can hold 6-8 guests comfortably in four double cabins. Facilities include en-suite showers, air conditioning, television & music systems and much more. A crew of three look after guests and are fluent in English, Portuguese and French. Perseverance normally sails on an all-inclusive basis and all meals are served on board and prepared by the crew. A continental breakfast is served daily and lunch & dinner are prepared with fresh ingredients of the day including fish which is caught on the basis of what will be consumed – nothing here is wasted.

Cape Verde’s diverse islands offer visitors the opportunity to discover unique landscapes ideal for walking and exploring wildlife; four species of turtles (Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Leatherback and Green Turtles) visit the Cape Verde islands as they cross the Atlantic. There is a variety of bird species on Cape Verde with many endemic to the islands including the Bannerman’s Buzzard, the Cape Verde Peregrine and the Raso Lark. Scuba divers can see an impressive range of tropical fish, including parrot fish, angelfish, groupers, moray eels, manta rays, barracudas and sharks (including the nurse and tiger sharks), marine turtles and even whale sharks if you are lucky. Humpback whales can be spotted off the coastline from February to June.

This is not the Caribbean though! These islands are raw and include windswept beautiful beaches. Cape Verde is fast attracting increasing numbers of visitors. A country with a population of around 500,000, last year saw visitor numbers surpass the population size to just over 500,000 tourists. The islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão however remain relatively undiscovered.

The types of holidays one could expect from both these islands include:
São Vicente: Setting sail, history, culture, nightlife and music, beaches, windsurfing
Santo Antão: Walking & hiking, some adventure sport
